He was known as the "Cincinnati Cobra" because he was from Cincinnati, Ohio and had a venomous fighting style.


Charles fought and defeated many of the top heavyweights of his era, including Jersey Joe Walcott, Archie Moore, and Joe Louis.


He held the World Heavyweight Championship twice, first winning it in 1950 by defeating Jersey Joe Walcott, and then again in 1951 by defeating Joe Louis.


Charles had a total of 131 professional fights, with a record of 93 wins (52 by knockout), 25 losses, and 3 draws.


After retiring from boxing, he became a professional wrestler and continued to fight in the ring, often under a mask as "The Masked Marvel."
